Van Der Tuin Harmen

My work embodies a deep appreciation for the beauty found in simplicity, imperfection, and the transient nature of existence.
My rich impasto technique, achieved through the use of various tools, infuses my works with a vibrant vitality. The interplay between painting and sculpture blurs boundaries, resulting in artworks that physically occupy space and possess a distinct presence.

Central to my artistic vision is my exploration of pure and intense colors derived from pigments. These colors not only bring a sense of tranquility to my works but also imbue them with a captivating and sensory presence. The ultra-matte surfaces and patina of my works, reminiscent of velvet, create a unique visual effect. They absorb light, allowing it to be tenderly reflected back onto the forms, enhancing their depth and texture.

My works go beyond mere representations; they stand as independent entities with their own intrinsic value. This aligns me with the tradition of ZERO artists such as Robert Ryman and Yves Klein. The works evoke a minimalist aesthetic at times, while also embracing a lively and expressionistic quality on other occasions. This dynamic tension drives my creative process, much like the changing seasons in nature.

For me, spontaneity is an essential aspect of my work. Each creative endeavor brings surprises, resulting in works that exude a joyful and vibrant presence. They radiate a sense of freedom and strength. In the spirit of Lao Tzu's wisdom, I work with the concept of "Being," while utilizing the power of "Non-Being." I aim to make visible the profound and invisible aspects of humanity, believing that they are of utmost importance. This pursuit serves as my life's motto, compelling me to bring forth these hidden truths through my art.

In the midst of a time characterized by polarity and confusion, my approach offers wisdom and guidance. By embracing the beauty of imperfection, the transience of existence, and the exploration of the intangible, my work encourages us to find solace and meaning amidst the complexities of our world.
