“Joyful creation enhances our imagination, and through
curiosity, we can discover extraordinary beauty in every aspect of our daily lives.”
Ahryun Lee is a distinguished ceramic artist whose work is profoundly shaped by her cross-cultural
experiences and academic background. Born in 1989 in Seoul, South Korea, she obtained degrees in
Fine Arts and Design in Ceramics from Seoul National University in 2011 and later from the Royal
College of Art in London in 2016. Now based near in Munich, Germany, Lee’s artistic practice is
marked by a conceptual and experimental approach that allows her to explore the intersections of
art, design, and craft.
Her focus on materiality and the potential for creative exploration within contemporary art enables
her to push the boundaries of ceramics as a medium. Color and texture play a central role in her
work, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that invites tactile interaction.
Her pieces often feature organic shapes and vibrant patterns, evoking a sense of nostalgia and
emotional connection for viewers. Her work is often described as a whimsical ceramic universe
which is vivid, flamboyant and playful. “Joyful creation enhances our imagination, and through
curiosity, we can discover extraordinary beauty in every aspect of our daily lives.”, and this is one of
the core purposes of art in her belief as an artist. Therefore, Lee aims to stimulate curiosity and
foster communication through her art, encouraging an exchange of narratives between her
sculptures and the audience. In her pursuit of innovation, she explores new possibilities for ceramics,
seeking to expand its traditional context and redefine its boundaries. By engaging with both
historical and contemporary influences, she aspires to create extraordinary experiences that
challenge conventional definitions of ceramics and blur the lines between art and design.
Her broad perspective allows her to navigate multiple fields, including art, design, and craft.
Internationally recognized in the art and design world, Lee has exhibited her work in prestigious
shows such as Art Basel Design Miami, Salone del Mobile, Collect London, as well as numerous
exhibitions across the USA, Europe, the Middle East, and Korea. Additionally, she has attracted the
attention of the fashion industry, collaborating with Céline London and recently working with Dolce
& Gabbana on the DG Generation Designers project during Milan Design Week 2023.
