Martijn Albert Willem Wauters, aka Albert, was born in 1979 and lives and works in Beersel, Belgium. He studied communication science at the University of Brussel and is artistically self-taught, which explains his specific style. He is best known for his naïve-styled paintings rich with wit and humour. His aim is to make people smile when they see one of his works. He Iikes simplicity and avoids intentionally heavy or profound themes. His works show ironic or larger-than-life moments and a lot of drama: He always paints people with whom something is happening and tries to evoke a funny story in that image.
In terms of style, there are a number of Flemish artists he really admires, such as Breugel the elder and James Ensor. Breugel of course because he also incorporated all those little human stories into his work and Ensor because his colourful way of making heads (masks) is so appealing and intriguing. He also finds inspiration in outsider and folk art.
He primarily works with acrylic paint and has often things returning in his paintings, such as a police car, a pink cabrio and many blond women. He sometimes produces works that consist of several pieces, such as a conga line that goes on and on. This creates a large work of art consisting of several pieces.
Albert has exhibited his work internationally, including shows in Miami, London, Paris and Busan. His art continues to engage viewers with its blend of humor, relatability, and subtle commentary on the human experience.
